So, I read this really interesting article about Melissa McCarthy’s recent comments about her performance as Ursula in the upcoming live-action version of ‘The Little Mermaid.’ Apparently, she said that her take on the iconic villain was ‘100 percent’ inspired by drag queens, which I thought was pretty cool.
Basically, Melissa explained that she wanted Ursula to embody the fun and flamboyance of the drag queen community, while also channeling their confidence and fearlessness. She even said that she watched endless YouTube videos of drag performers to get inspiration for her makeup and wardrobe.
As someone who has always admired the artistry and creativity of drag, I thought it was awesome to see such a mainstream actress embracing and celebrating that culture. And given Melissa’s comedic chops and larger-than-life personality, I have a feeling she’s going to absolutely slay the role of Ursula.
But beyond just the entertainment value, I think it’s important that we highlight and elevate the contributions of marginalized communities like the drag queen community, especially in the mainstream media. By showcasing their talent and influence, we’re not only providing representation and visibility, but also challenging societal norms and stereotypes.
All in all, I’m excited to see Melissa’s take on Ursula and the impact it could have in opening doors for more diverse and inclusive representation in Hollywood. Fingers crossed it’s just the beginning!
