Actress and climate activist Jane Fonda is leading a group of Hollywood heavyweights in a summit aimed at urging filmmakers and scriptwriters to create content that addresses climate change. The event, called “Climate Crisis: The Role of Entertainment in Driving Change,” is slated to take place on May 7th, and will feature big names such as Ava DuVernay, Don Cheadle, and Mira Nair. The goal of the summit is to encourage the entertainment industry to incorporate climate change into their work and use their platform to influence audiences around the world. According to Fonda, “movies and television are the most powerful storytelling mediums in the world,” and can be used to change the discourse around climate change. There is a growing need for more representation of climate change in the media, not only to educate the public but also to cultivate a sense of urgency around the issue. This is not the first time Fonda has tried to make an impact on climate change through Hollywood; her Fire Drill Fridays protests, where she was arrested five times, were also aimed at raising awareness about the issue. As the entertainment industry continues to shape our cultural norms and beliefs, it is more important than ever to use it to address pressing issues such as climate change. In doing so, we can affect change on a global scale.
