Our prison system is meant to rehabilitate inmates, but sadly, one Georgia inmate didn’t even make it out alive. Harold Hempstead, an inmate at the Dade Correctional Institution in Miami, was allegedly eaten alive by bugs in his cell. The conditions were described as “not fit for a deceased animal” by his family attorney.
Hempstead had claimed in the past that the prison was rife with corruption and abuse. He had recently released a handwritten account of the squalid conditions in the facility. His cell, in particular, was infested with bugs and had no working toilet for months. The lawyer called for an immediate investigation and said that prison officials must be held accountable for this appalling treatment of inmates.
This case highlights the appalling conditions that many prisoners are forced to endure. It is unacceptable that inmates are being held in facilities that are not even fit for a deceased animal. Although we may not always agree with the actions of those who have been incarcerated, we must still do all we can to ensure that their basic human rights are being met. This tragic incident must prompt our leaders to reflect on the state of our prison system and take appropriate action towards creating a more humane and just system for all.
