Emerson College adds period products to men's restrooms, meeting group's demand for 'menstrual equality'

Emerson College in Boston, Massachusetts has taken a significant step towards menstrual equality by adding free menstrual products in men’s restrooms on campus. This move comes after calls from the student group ‘Period’ for equal access to period products. The student-led organization aims to eradicate the stigma associated with menstruation and promote global menstrual equity. The college has responded by installing dispensers containing free tampons and pads in the men’s restrooms in addition to the women’s restrooms. This makes Emerson one of the few colleges globally to incorporate menstrual products in men’s bathrooms.

The initiative is especially essential considering the broad inclusion of transgender and non-binary students, as periods don’t discriminate against gender or sexuality. Unfortunately, many who menstruate continue to feel shame and judgment about it instead of receiving the support and access to supplies they need for a healthy, active lifestyle. This inequity has affected many individuals in households and schools globally.

Emerson College Student Government Association President Zack Teperman believes this move to be a crucial advancement for menstrual equality, and he has expressed his eagerness to work with the administration and Period to continue promoting gender-inclusive policies. The move is, without a doubt, a step in the right direction towards breaking down the stigma of menstruation and promoting gender inclusivity.

The lack of access to menstrual products is often a barrier to education and a healthy lifestyle for many individuals globally. Hence, increasing access is essential in achieving menstrual equity. The move by Emerson College corrects this imbalance and points towards a future where individuals can access products freely, fairly and with no shame regardless of their gender.

In conclusion, the inclusion of menstrual products in men’s bathrooms by Emerson College is a revolutionary step in promoting gender equality and combating period stigma. This move highlights that small steps can make a massive difference and encourages other institutions to follow suit, promoting menstrual equity worldwide.
