So, I just read this crazy article about a celebrity chef named John Mountain who banned vegans from his restaurant and told them to ‘f--- off’. Can you believe it? Apparently, the chef posted a sign outside his restaurant that read, “We do not serve vegan food. If you are a vegan, then f--- off.”
From what I gathered, John Mountain was frustrated with vegans who came into his restaurant demanding special meals. He even went as far as saying that veganism is a “cult” and that it’s not a dietary requirement.
Honestly, I was shocked when I read this. As someone who has vegan friends, I think they should be able to enjoy a meal out just like anyone else without feeling ostracized. I understand that some restaurants may not have many vegan options, but to outright ban them seems extreme.
On the other hand, I can see where the chef is coming from if he had some bad experiences with demanding customers. But, regardless of that, I don’t think it’s right to treat people like that.
Overall, this article brings up an important conversation about restaurant etiquette and the hospitality industry’s responsibility to accommodate all dietary preferences and restrictions. I hope more restaurants can strive to be inclusive and welcoming to all customers, regardless of their food preferences.
