If you identify as left-wing and often find yourself feeling miserable and contemptuous, there may be something else weighing you down: your appearances. According to a recent study, people who lean towards the left politically and claim to be unhappy and pessimistic are also judged as less physically attractive by others.
The study, conducted by psychologist Dr. Rolfe Daus Peterson from Susquehanna University in Pennsylvania, investigated the links between people’s political ideology, personality traits, and physical attractiveness. It involved showing photos of people who identified themselves as left-wing or right-wing to a group of 250 participants, asking them to rate their physical attractiveness, and then analyzing the data.
The results indicated that people who identify as left-wing and exhibit negative personality traits, including unhappiness, cynicism, and anger, were consistently rated as less attractive than their right-wing counterparts. Moreover, the participants’ ratings were independent of the individuals’ actual good-lookingness.
While the study may seem trivial at first glance, it is worth noting that our physical appearances can create implicit biases towards political views. This implicit bias may subconsciously influence that we perceive information and, ultimately, people we disagree with as less intelligent, less capable, or less attractive.
It is also essential to acknowledge that the study’s findings do not suggest that people who identify as left-wing are objectively less attractive. Still, an individual’s personality traits, attitudes, and beliefs can influence how others perceive them and, as a result, their role in society.
In short, this study suggests that there may be a connection between political leanings, attitudes, and physical attractiveness. However, it is essential to recognize that this correlation does not imply causation and that our physical appearances should not influence how people treat us or our political views.
