I just read this crazy article about a 12-year-old girl who was allegedly raped by a boy in a trans-inclusive bathroom at her middle school. Apparently, the girl wrote about it in her diary and her mom found it.
The whole thing is pretty disturbing, and it’s definitely a reminder of the dangers that can come with gender-neutral bathrooms. Even though they aim to be more inclusive, they can also create situations where people aren’t safe.
I remember when my high school got a new gender-neutral bathroom, and it caused a lot of controversy. Some people were worried about safety, and others thought it was important to have a space where transgender students could feel comfortable and included. It was a difficult topic to navigate, and this article really brings it all back.
It’s hard to imagine what this poor girl and her family must be going through. I hope the school takes the appropriate measures to ensure that this never happens again. It’s also a good reminder for all of us to look out for our loved ones, especially young people who might be going through something like this but are too afraid to speak up.
At the end of the day, we all just want to feel safe when we’re out in the world. It’s up to all of us to make sure that our schools, workplaces, and public spaces are as safe as possible for everyone.
